Iconic London fashion designer Vivienne Westwood boldly goes where no fashion designer has gone before in criticizing First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe, calling it “dreadful.”
Vivienne Westwood, best known for curating Punk fashion in the late 70s and 80s, has made a careers of rattling cages and provoking reaction. Safety pins, chains, torn mesh, exotic prints and torn fabrics became fashion staples after she introduced them into the mainstream’s fashion lexicon. So it was only natural that when offered an interview with the fashion maven, The New York Times seized upon the opportunity to create a stir.
With Michelle Obama solidly in the cross-hairs, The New York Times asked Westwood her thoughts on the conservative First Lady’s fashion choices:
“Q. You must love our first lady, who is famous for recycling her clothes.
A. Don’t talk about her. It’s dreadful what she wears.
Q. What?
A. I don’t want to talk about it. Really, I can’t. She’s a very nice looking lady, but it’s a nonstarter regarding clothes that suit her. Jackie Kennedy was a different matter altogether. It just has to suit her and be something that makes a human being more glamorous. That’s what fashion is there for. It’s there to help, not just to make you look more conservative.”
We can but speculate how Vivienne Westwood would dress Michelle Obama as the First Lady tends to her White House duties. Perhaps this bold take on the business suit:
