In the months prior to its release, media insiders who had seen screeners of “District 9” had been quietly singing its praise as possibly being one of the best science fiction films of the summer. Now, the media favorite has secured glowing reviews since it opened Friday.
Rotten Tomatoes gave “District 9” a 92. The Meta Critic survey of 33 reviews gave it a score of 81. Some of the most enthusiastic critics were John Anderson of the Washington Post, who describes “District 9” as “a sci-fi-fueled indictment of man’s inhumanity to man and the non-human,” and Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly, who calls it “a thinking person’s sci-fi movie.”
“District 9” produced box office receipts of about $13 million on opening day Friday. That figure grew to an estimated $14.2 by Saturday, according to Box Office Mojo.
