Bernie Madoff’s misfortune has turned into a family curse, as earlier today Mark Madoff, the son of Bernie Madoff, was found hanged in in Manhattan home on what is the second anniversary of his father’s arrest at the hands of U.S. federal authorities.
“Mark Madoff took his own life today. This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy,” said attorney Martin Flumenbaum, who represents Mark Madoff and his brother Andrew, in a statement.
At 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, New York police responded to a call from the 4th floor of 158 Mercer St. in New York City’s SoHo. A male was reported unconscious and unresponsive. Emergency medical services arrived, and declared him dead on the spot. Police confirmed the man’s identity as Mark Madoff, 46 years old, according to officer Michael Debonis from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for New York City police. The cause of Madoff’s death has yet to be determined, said Debonis.
