The Illinois Supreme Court held, in a unanimous decision Thursday, that Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel can remain on the ballot in next month’s election.
Emanuel’s attorneys filed an appeal Tuesday with the state’s Supreme Court in response to a lower court decision Monday that knocked him off the ballot. The appellate panel ruled 2-1 that Emanuel did not meet the residency standard to run for mayor.
In a 7-0 decision Thursday, Justice Robert Thomas blasted the appellate court for overruling a Chicago elections board decision to put Emanuel, formerly President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, on the ballot.
