Fast Five: Review

10 years after The Fast and the Furious introduced movie-goers to the exciting world of urban street hot-car racing, heartthrobs Vin Diesel and Paul Walker reprise their fan-favorite roles as Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Connor respectively in the franchise’ latest installment, Fast Five. But this time around, the two are joined by action star Duane Johnson who plays hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs assigned to capture Dom and Brian.

Directed by Justin Lin, who also helmed Fast and Furious and Tokyo Drift, this latest installment, Fast Five, delivers much of the high-octane non-stop action racing fans desire. The film picks up with Brian, Mia and Dom in Rio, pulling off one last job to out-fox an evil businessman. Naturally, they must assemble a team of elite racers and avoid agent Hobbs to get things done.

While both Diesel and Walker soundly lead Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson’s agent Hobbs and a decent heist script transforms the film into a quality franchise installment. The rivalry between Hobbs and Dom serves up intriguing moment-to-moment tension as well as larger character-focused story beats. Seeing the two heavy-hitters face off will, for most fans, deliver on all the fan expectations.
