US Protesters Seek End of War, Focus on Racism, Poverty

Thousands lined Malcolm X Boulevard Aug. 13 to join the “Millions March” demonstration against the “kinetic action” in Libya and what many see as the West’s efforts to exploit Africa and Africans in the Diaspora. The protest is part of larger political action aimed to take its Pan African organizers to the United Nations on Tuesday, Sept. 20, during the annual U.N. General Assembly of the Heads of State to address what some call the “total domination of the Western led Security Council.”

“African nations and peoples must unite to stop the re-colonization aggression and continue to build a movement toward a United States of Africa, now,” writes Amadi Ajamu in the San Francisco Bay View. “We must stop the attack on Africans throughout the Diaspora, including the United States and Europe, during this global political-economic crisis.”

The Harlem prtost brought together many popular voices in the African-American community, including Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan and New York City Counselman Charles Barron. “We’re sending a message to the White House, to the State House and to City Hall,” Barron said to the crowd in attendance. “Don’t have us bring London (riots) to America. Don’t push us to bring Egypt (riots) to America. We’ve had enough. Black people are fed up.”

“America has trillions for war. We need to declare a war on poverty, unemployment and racism. We’ve had enough and need to take it to the streets,” he said. more
