6000 Dead of Cholera in Haiti, 400,000 Infected

The UN has been ineffective in battling the Cholera outbreak that has plagued earthquake ravaged Haiti for more than a year. The disease, thought to have been carried to Haiti by Nepalese UN peacekeepers, according to UN reports, has claimed over 6,000 Haitian lives. A reported 400,000 more have been infected.

UN speculates that the contagion has spread because Haitians are now relying on rivers as their main source of water for drinking, bathing and washing. The UN confirms that Nepalese Cholera was not present in Haiti prior to the UN peacekeeping mission to help the nation recover from the massive earthquake that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives. But the UN has offered no explanation of how cholera infected UN peacekeepers were allowed into Haiti in the first place and why after all this time the Haitians are forced to drink untreated water.

Epidemiologists say the number of infections has spiked recently in many provinces.
