What do cloth weavers and assassins have in common? Apparently they share a penchant for murder and mayhem. In this perhaps too fanciful action film based on a graphic novel of the same title, Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie team up to show us why we shouldn’t piss off cloth weavers. The Fraternity, a thousand-year-old secret society of assassins masquerading as textile merchants, in search of fresh kills, read threads containing coded messages. No one knows exactly where the coded messages come from, and everyone assumes the messages are from god or some other divine source. This is perhaps the weakest element in the film. How can characters with such obvious talent be so gullible and easily manipulated? The director attempts to compensate for this gaping hole in logic by peppering the film with action that is at times, quite stunning, and by using Freeman and Jolie to add weight to film by merely being present in it. But that’s not enough to shake off the feeling that Wanted might have been more satisfying as a direct to video film.
