“Inglourious Basterds” pulled in $38 million at the box office in its opening weekend, Quentin Tarantino’s best opening weekend yet. But the sci-fi action drama full of relative newcomers, “District 9,” raked in $37.3 Million its opening weekend.
Lifetime gross receipts for “Basterds,” according to Box Office Mojo, total an estimated $46.9 million domestically, with $35.5 million in foreign sales, or about $82.5 million worldwide.
“Basterds” suffered a slight decline in ticket sales from Friday to Saturday of only 10%. “District 9” took an equally shallow fall of 10.9% from Friday to Saturday its opening weekend. Total domestic ticket sales for “District 9”, which cost only $30 million to produce, is $76.8 million, and $91.1 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Looks like the two films will run a near dead heat through Friday, when new releases Halloween II and The Final Destination toss additional variables into the mix.
