Given the success “Resident Evil: Afterlife” has had at the box office, hauling in over $71 million in worldwide box office receipts, making it the seventh highest-grossing September opening ever, and the highest-grossing opening weekend yet for the Resident Evil franchise, it is little wonder that a sequel is in the works. Devoted fans of the this zombie bashing franchise can look forward to more high-def ass-kicking, perhaps in 3D. But dare we hope for more?
“This new Resident Evil is the first one to ever open at No. 1 worldwide. It’s the biggest movie in the franchise,” Jovovich told New York Magazine’s Vulture blog. “So we’re definitely going to make another one.” But will RE 5 be as good as the previous films?
What made the first “Resident Evil” work so well is character development. In “Resident Evil,” the secondary characters were developed so well that we grew to care about them. We didn’t want to see Rain Ocampo (Michelle Rodriguez) turn into a flesh-eating psycho. Nor did we want to see Matt Addison (Eric Mabius) get infected and spirited away by Umbrella Corp in the end. We knew Spence Parks (James Purefoy) had to go, but at one point we cared whether he could redeem himself. And it was just plain shocking to see James “One” Shade (Colin Salmon) checker boarded.
Will it be as shocking or sad to see Claire (Ali Larter), Chris (Wentworth Miller), K-Mart or Luther West (Boris Kodjoe) bite it in RE5? If they kick more undead-butt alongside Alice, you bet ya!
