PS3 Gets a Netflix Upgrade

Sony and Netflix announced today that PlayStation 3 users can now toss away their special Blu-ray discs used to stream Netflix video on their PS3 consoles. That’s awesome, right. But it gets better. The PS3 will be the first Netflix-ready device to support full-on surround sound on streaming titles from Netflix.

The revamped Netflix app will be available for download starting Monday, Oct. 18. Once the new PS3 Netflix app launches, Wii will become the sole game console requiring a disc for Netflix streaming. PS3 Netflix app will support 1080p/I video for some titles.

The new Netflix application will also update the PS3 Netflix interface, offering a full grid of poster art rather than just a single row of titles, and allowing usage of the analog sticks on the PS3′s Sixaxis controller to navigate through Netflix offerings.
