In last week’s episode, we discovered that both Elena and Katherine are doppelgangers for the original Katerina who existed sometime before 1490. We also learned that older meaner vamps are hot on Katherine’s trail and have kidnapped Elena to break the witch-created curse that makes vamps allergic to sunlight. Apparently, a Katerina doppelganger must be bled dry to break the curse. But the big thrill was discovering that the oldest vampires can walk in daylight without the aide of rings and are extremely hard to kill. They don’t necessarily die even when staked through the heart.
Last week, we also began to see unfold the inevitability that poor Tyler will get into major heaps of trouble as he struggles to cope with his werewolf powers without a mentor. But Caroline proves to be a pretty good substitute for Mason, although she doesn’t know much about being a wolf man.
We also discovered last week that Bonnie’s got some relatives with witch powers lurking about, helping Katherine. Someone may also have a budding crush on little Bonnie, despite her pesky little nosebleed.
Last night, we finally learn about Katherine’s origins. Turns out she was just a small town girl who took the midnight train going anywhere. Actually, she was banished from her small Bavarian hamlet for being an unwed mother and ended up in London, falling prey to the oldest vampires on earth, which just happen to need her dead. Discovering who turns Katherine is a fun twist. Watching Katherine outfox the other vamps is even more fun.
Of course, we knew that the new kid in town couldn’t be coincidence. Turns out he and his dad are warlocks and they’ve teamed up with the oldest vamps on earth to take out all of the supernaturals of Mystic Falls, including Bonnie, Caroline and the doppelgangers.
Vampire Diaries takes a hiatus until December 2nd.
