National Geographic Channel is set to rebroadcast “The Liquid Bomb Plot,” the story of how British and American intellegence forces teamed up to foil a plot by scores of terrorists to plant liquid explosives on at least 10 America and Canada-bound jetliners.
Widely reported in 2006, the liquid bomb scheme was the catalyst for the 3-1-1 liquid rule for carry-on luggage, according to high ranking intelligence officers interviewed for the documentary. National Geographic obtained unprecedented access to undercover agents and top officials from the CIA, Homeland Security and British Counter-Terror Command, managing to capture the inside story behind the largest and most sophisticated terrorism plot since September 11, 2001.
Interviews include, from the U.S., General Michael Hayden, former director, CIA; Michael Chertoff, former secretary, Department of Homeland Security; Robert Grenier, former Islamabad station chief, CIA; Kip Hawley, former director, Transportation Security Administration; and Charlie Allen, chief intelligence officer, Department of Homeland Security. Top U.K. interviews include Lord John Reid, former home secretary and former defense secretary, Britain; Andy Hayman, former assistant commissioner for specialist operations, Metropolitan Police; and Peter Clarke, OBE, former national co-coordinator of terrorist investigations, Metropolitan Police.
“The Liquid Bomb Plot” airs Sunday, August 28 at 10 a.m.
