About THE HUNGER GAMES
The Hunger Games is a film based on a young adult novel of the same name written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on September 14, 2008, by Scholastic, and is the first book of “The Hunger Games” trilogy.
The book is written in first person and introduces sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem where the countries of North America once existed. This is where the government, working in a central city called the Capitol, holds power. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol chooses one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of 12 districts for a massive televised battle in which only one person can survive.
The book has been released as a paperback and also an audiobook, which was read by Carolyn McCormick.
“The Hunger Games” had an initial print of 200,000, has been translated into 26 different languages and rights have been sold in 38 countries.
The book received mostly positive reviews from major reviewers and authors, such as Stephen King.
In the film adaptation, the focus is on the games as a twisted form of punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.
The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following.
Lionsgate will release The Hunger Games on March 23, 2012.
Fans should also check out eight new official character posters from The Hunger Games, the most anticipated adaptation of 2012.
The poster collection includes some favorite citizens of Panem: Rue (Amandla Stenberg), Cato (Alexander Ludwig), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), Effie (Elizabeth Banks), Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Gale (Liam Hemsworth), so be sure to download them all below.

I loved this book. And the other two ones as well. I listened to them as audiobooks, which really brought them to life. I can’t wait for the movie.
This is a great way to introduce the books to the uninitiated!
