In a statement Friday, the pop singer described what she called a “difficult decision.” Britney Spears stated she had an incredible time working on the singing contest but that it was time to get back into the studio to record.

It was widely reported Thursday that Britney Spears and “The X Factor” were parting ways after a season in which the show’s ratings fell and Spears received lackluster reviews as a panelist. Fellow panelist Antonio “L.A.” Reid previously announced he was leaving, giving creator-executive producer Simon Cowell two spots to fill.

Born in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, Britney Spears began performing as a child, landing acting roles in stage productions and television shows. She signed with Jive Records in 1997 and released her debut studio album …Baby One More Time in 1999, which became the best-selling album by a teenage solo artist. During her first decade in the music industry, she became a prominent figure in mainstream popular music and popular culture, followed by a much-publicized personal life.

Britney Spears’ first two albums established her as a pop icon and broke sales records, while title tracks “…Baby One More Time” and “Oops!… I Did It Again” became international number-one hits. Spears was credited with influencing the revival of teen pop during the late 1990s, and became the ‘best-selling teenaged artist of all time’ before she turned 20, garnering her honorific titles such as “Princess of Pop”.

“The X Factor” is a television music competition franchise created by Simon Cowell. It originated in the United Kingdom, where it was devised as a replacement for “Pop Idol.” It is now held in various countries. The contestants are aspiring pop singers drawn from public competitive auditions. The series is produced by executive producer Simon Cowell and his company SYCOtv. The “X Factor” of the title refers to the undefinable “something” that makes for star quality
