Oscars host Seth MacFarlane tells Popdecay that tonight’s 85th Academy Awards show will be “off the rails.”
Seth MacFarlane, 39, a comedy writer and voice actor, widely known as the creator of the animated TV series “Family Guy” and “American Dad,” has attendees intrigued about whether he will show up on time to host Hollywood’s biggest night of the year, the Academy Awards.
“We love the expectation of the newness of Seth and we love the fact that people don’t quite know what they’re going to get with him as a host, said Neil Meron, co-producer of the Academy Awards with Craig Zadan. “We think it adds to the speculation and the interest in the show.”
Some of the newness viewers and audience-goers may expect is that Seth MacFarlane may not arrive on time. In an interview with the comedian, MacFarlane said he’s not sure when he will get to the Oscars. “The biggest challenge is going to be getting there on time,” he said in a sit-down. “I think it starts at 5:30pm and I have like a 4:15 pm with my pool guy to talk about resurfacing part of the hot tub.” “…I’m hoping it’s not a hard 5:30pm, so …if it is, I’m in trouble.”
If Seth MacFarlane does make it to the Oscars on time, he says the show is going to be “off-the rails.” “I’m going to wear one black sock and one other sock that is also black but a different fabric.” “…that’s the kind of thing you can expect at the Oscars this year.”
So what else do viewers and attendees have to look forward to? Well, Seth MacFarlane says they can expect a healthy distance between them and himself. “If there’s one group that’s unable to laugh at themselves, it is Hollywood actors,” he said. “You’re uncomfortable. They’re uncomfortable. The audience is uncomfortable. …I think, let’s just keep the boundary clear. You know, put an electrified fence at the base of the stage and …make it ‘this the U.S. and this is Mexico.”
MacFarlane struck a serious note when discussing the kind of host the Oscars need and whether he can fit the bill. “The ideal Oscar host is somebody who goes into the awards show knowing that even if he sprouts wings on stage and levitates 5 feet off the ground live on television, that Entertainment Weekly will still go ‘eh.’
