gotham film awards 2026 nominees

NEW YORK — The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced nominations Tuesday for its 36th annual Gotham Film Awards, recognizing 42 features and 25 performances across 11 categories. Five films tied for the most nominations, with four each: Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, Arie and Chuko Esiri’s Clarissa, Marine Atlan’s La Gradiva, Olivia Wilde’s The Invite and Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care. Winners will be announced November 30 at Cipriani Wall Street in lower Manhattan.

“It has been a remarkable year for film, with audiences turning out in theaters for bold, distinctive work,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film & Media Institute. “This year’s nominations, alongside our Tributes and the return of the Audience Award, reflect that abundance.”

Leading Nominees

Clarissa (NEON) and The Invite (A24) are the only films among the five leaders nominated for Best Feature. Clarissa also received nominations for adapted screenplay, for Sophie Okonedo in the lead performance category and for India Amarteifio as breakthrough performer.

The Invite was nominated for adapted screenplay, for Penélope Cruz in the supporting performance category and for the Gotham Audience Award. The other three leaders are nominated for Best International Feature.

All of a Sudden (NEON) received nominations for Hamaguchi as director, for adapted screenplay and for Tao Okamoto in supporting performance. Tender Loving Care (Bleecker Street) was nominated for Leigh as director, for original screenplay and for Kate O’Flynn in supporting performance.

La Gradiva (1-2 Special) earned nominations for Atlan as breakthrough director, for original screenplay and for Colas Quignard as breakthrough performer.

Other Categories

Sandra Wollner (Everytime), Andrey Zvyagintsev (Minotaur) and Jane Schoenbrun (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma) complete the Best Director field alongside Hamaguchi and Leigh.

The Gothams’ performance categories are not divided by gender. Lead performance nominees include Mahershala Ali, Gillian Anderson, Julianne Moore, Ian McKellen and Andrew Scott. Supporting nominees include Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield, Sandra Hüller and Channing Tatum.

John Early received two nominations for Maddie’s Secret, in lead performance and breakthrough director.

Best Feature eligibility requires a U.S. citizen or permanent resident in at least two of the director, producer and screenwriter roles, TheWrap reported. As a result, All of a Sudden and Possible Love compete in Best International Feature.

Nominees were selected by five committees made up largely of film critics and festival programmers, according to TheWrap. Winners are chosen by separate juries of film professionals.

Audience Award Returns

The Gotham Audience Award returns after a six-year hiatus. The Gotham said the award “celebrates films that transcend the screen to become defining cultural moments.”

Nominees were drawn from submitted films, measured by opening-weekend per-theater average against the highest-rated and most-watched films of 2026, according to the institute. Gotham members will vote to determine the winner.

The eight nominees are Backrooms, La Bola Negra, The Drama, The Invite, Michael, Obsession, Project Hail Mary and You Can See Everything.

Awards Season Context

The Gothams are among the first major honors of the awards season and are watched as an early indicator of critical attention. Nominations do not predict Academy Award results.

Since the Best Feature category was introduced in 2004, 33 Gotham Best Feature nominees have gone on to receive Best Picture Oscar nominations, TheWrap reported.
