Director/Screenwriter Travis Fine masterfully takes on the evolution of child adoption in LGBTQ communities in “Any Day Now.” Set in 1970s Los Angeles, “Any Day Now” portrays a loving gay couple, Rudy (Alan Cumming) and Paul (Garret Dillahunt) in their struggle to provide safe and stable home for a Down-Syndrome child who has been virtually abandoned by his drugged-out party-girl/prostitute mother. Entrenched homophobia thwarts the pair’s efforts to adopt the child, but they learn something about their own prejudices, and their opponents discover how adoption inequality endangers children.
Cumming and Dillahunt deliver first-rate performances. Cumming plays Rudy, a well-worn streetwise drag queen with a heart of gold opposite Dillahunt’s fresh-eyed, newly gay and closeted prosecutor. Fine’s script offers ample character development and well-paced action that thoughtfully mines both sides of the debate.
“Any Day Now” won the Audience Award for Outstanding Dramatic Feature Film at Outfest and the Audience Award at Tribeca Film Festival.
