“Mosquita y Mari” is a sweet and poignant story of two young teenagers who discover their mutual attraction to each other. Yolanda (Fenessa Pineda) is an A-student from a stable two-parent family. She meets her somewhat tom-boyish yet spirited neighbor, Mari (Venecia Troncoso), who works odd jobs to help her single mother keep the family afloat. The two girls find instant chemistry as opposites attract. They quickly become best friends. It is only when Mari pulls away from their friendship – to devote attention to securing funds for the family – that the girls realize they are bound.
“Mosquita y Mari” unfolds organically, and is told with striking authenticity. The characters never kiss or have sex, but they are intimate. Director/Screenwriter Aurora Guerrero works magic in pulling it off, keeping viewers engaged throughout. The actresses, both unknowns, nail their performances, while East L.A., the film’s setting, parades the strength of working-class Los Angelenos.
“Mosquita y Mari” premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2012 and screened as the Fusion Centerpiece film at Outfest 2012. “Mosquita y Mari” won the Audience Award for Outstanding First U.S. Dramatic Feature Film at Outfest 2012.
