DJ AM Dies, Troubled Past Exposed

dj amIs anyone surprised that Adam Michael Goldstein (DJ AM), was found dead yesterday in his SoHo apartment from an apparent crack overdose? DJ AM, 36, best known for working the celebrity club scene, dating starlets including Nicole Richie and Mandy Moore, and his huge sneaker collection of about 1,000 pairs, had a troubled past. Reportedly DJ AM admitted to past addictions to crack cocaine. According to New York’s WPIX, prescription drug bottles were found near his body in his apartment.

In an interview with The New York Times in 2007, DJ AM said he drank heavily, used cocaine and smoked crack in his early 20s. He is also said to have attempted suicide in 1997. But he is said to have managed to stay sober for nine years.

A native of Philadelphia, DJ AM was also known for his “mash up” style of spinning, in which he would jump across various genres and eras to combine songs from artists as different as Jay-Z and Journey.

MTV was to begin DJ AM’s new reality show in October, “Gone Too Far,” in which he and concerned families staged interventions for drug abusers. He told followers on Twitter on August 25 that he had “Just wrapped filming GTF in CT.” Plans for the show are not certain, but it may be scuttled.

DJ AM made headlines in 2008 by nearly escaping death in a September 2008 plane crash in South Carolina. Four people died. DJ AM was critically injured, as was his pal, Travis Barker, the former Blink-182 drummer.
