SyFy’s Caprica grows some stones. In last week’s thrilling episode, “Things We Lock Away,” there was more psychological warefare, torture and death than anywhere else on scripted cable that night.
Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz), as we saw previously, lays off the sauce, mans up and decides to get his corporation back from Thomas Vergis (John Pyper-Ferguson). To regain his business, Daniel has to blackmail all of his friend on the board of directors to secure their vote. Despite his initial moral objections, Daniel goes Godfather on his colleages, threatening to expose their darkest secrets. Some crumble under the pressure and commit suicide, but others simply cast a vote in Daniel’s favor. Presto, Daniel’s reinstated as CEO of his company by a unanimous vote.
Party pooper/lawyer Joseph Adama (Esai Morales) advises that Daniel has to kill Vergis, who as a Tauron, will keep coming after him unless he finds himself swimming with the fishes first. Daniel dismisses Adama’s advice and tries to negotiate with Vergis, who tells Daniel that he will not be able to leave Caprica alive due to Tauron traditions. He then demands that Daniel kill him, offering Daniel the Vergis family long knife to do the dirty deed. Daniel refuses to kill Vergis, and Vergis plunges the dagger into his own chest and stages it to look like Daniel did it. Vergis dies in Daniel’s arms and Greystone calls Joseph Adama to sanitize the place.
Meanwhile, in cyberspace, Zoe the avatar (Alessandra Torresani) walks in on a gladitorial combat in New Cap City and demands to see the other Death Walker, Tamara (Genevieve Buechner). She is told that the Death Walker will find her and is forced into fighting in the arena. Tamara, exacting revenge for the murder of her family and her real-world self, sneaks up on Zoe and shoots her down. Tamara is then joined by several others in arena who beat Zoe mercilessly.
At the urging of a hallucination of herself which only she can see (apparently like the visions which appeared to Gaius Baltar and the reborn Caprica-Six) Zoe accepts that she is not the same person as the original Zoe and fights back. Gaining the upper hand on Tamara, Zoe convinces her that New Cap City is a beneath her and that she (Zoe) has a purpose which she thinks Tamara can help her with. The two are seen leaving the arena hand-in-hand. Zoe also remembers being visited by an invisible version of herself since she was a small child and that this vision saved her from the house fire. Also in the flashback, Daniel copies the design of the Cylon from Zoe’s childhood drawings and Zoe creates the virtual avatar for the first time.
Lacy (Magda Apanowicz) is being held against her will, bound, gagged and drugged in Headmistress Sister Clarice Willow’s (Polly Walker) attic. After attempting unsuccessfully to escape and get help, she realises she is being drugged and refuses to eat until she speaks to Sister Clarice directly. When Sister Clarice finally visits, she convinces Lacy to reveal that the Zoe avatar survived but was destroyed with the prototype.
Sister Clarice insists that there must be a backup of Zoe’s program and Lacy concludes that it may be hidden in Zoe’s gold infinity-symbol pin. After a series of threats, and over Lacy’s protests, Sister Clarice informs Lacy that she will be sent to a religious extremists’ training program on Gemenon. While being taken out of the house, Olaf Willow threatens Lacy, telling her that he will be waiting for her when she eventually returns to Caprica.
In Sister Clarice’s remote cabin hideaway, Amanda Graystone has become suspicious of Sister Clarice and her possible involvement with Zoe’s death. She heard Sister Clarice utter Zoe’s name late one night while playing a virtual reality game created by Daniel. But Amanda can’t find any incriminating evidence against Sister Clarice at the cabin. Taking Agent Durham advice, Amanda, with no police training, decides to go deep under cover and infiltrate Sister Clarice’s coven of monotheistic fanatics. Initially, Sister Clarice refuses her request to go home with her, but later relents. Amanda arrives at the Adnan household and is introduced to the extended family.
