Hollywood’s abuzz about what many think could be the best sci-fi film of the year. District 9, a Tristar feature, follows the plight of an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth and suddenly finding a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. Focusing on concepts such as extreme poverty and crimes against humanity, District 9 tackles heavy old-school sci-fi themes and thereby promises to be a mainstream sci-fi film worth the price of admission.
Neill Blomkamp, the film’s producer, explained his inspiration for District 9 in this month’s Rolling Stone Magazine. “I was a science-fiction nut when I was growing up in Johannesburg. I just wanted to see that kind of imagery in a third world setting with the complex political history of South Africa.” For more, go to Rolling Stone.
