Will Ferrell’s Land of the Lost is a riotous tribute to the 1974 children’s television series Land of the Lost. Ferrell takes the best and worst elements of the original series to create a comedy as biting and as relevant to science as Zoolander was to fashion. It’s Dude Where’s My Car meets GalaxyQuest.

Here are 10 reasons to see it on the big screen:

1. The nerd gets the girl, the fame and glory;
2. Lots of sci-fi references with pretty good technical detail;
3. Standard theories of science are upended, including the belief that dinosaurs and cave men were “stupid”;
4. Timely and sensitive treatment of homophobia;
5. An amazing amount of adult humor, sexual suggestion and drug references despite the PG-13 rating;
6. Great blend of high-end and cheesy special effects;
7. Fantastic cinematography;
8. Excellent casting: Chaka rules!
9. Remarkable characterization of the Sleestaks, Sleestak Gods and Lost City;
10. Hendrick’s All Along the Watchtower plays during a hilarious “acid-trip” like scene, giving viewers lots to think about in our post-Battlestar Galactica sci-fi consuming world.
