The second-to-last episode of the third season of Syfy’s “Eureka” is one of the show’s strongest. 
“Have an Ice Day” is a refreshing callback to earlier episodes that have an air of mystery instead of the ‘it’s the new guy’s experiment’ theme that is normally prevalent. Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) is assigned to deal with the security of an ice core sample from the arctic.
While he reviews security checklists, the laboratory holding the core samples begins to freeze over suddenly, encasing one of the scientists in ice. These events, coupled with Zane’s (Niall Matter) sudden emotionless nature, set the stage for the episode’s emergency. Of course, the mystery is solved.
The second half of this season has been quite weak, with plots so cookie cutter as to defy logic, despite the alien/human spaceship overarch, which was an interesting idea. The lack of new scientists with crazy inventions made “Have an Ice Day” a much more refreshing episode. Instead of wondering when the sheriff and his deputy will see the neon writing on the wall, you actually are thinking along with them. Here’s hoping the writing continues in this vein.
