Last season’s finale was killer, with Sam (Jared Padalecki) agreeing to give his soul to the Devil in a last ditch effort to save humanity from the apocalypse, and Dean (Jensen Ackles) living with the knowledge that his brother is rotting in an inferno of pain and suffering. This season picks up with Dean living a very pedestrian suburban lifestyle until a JIN poisons him and forces Sam to come to his rescue.
That’s right, Sam’s back. Remember how in last season’s finale, at the very end, Sam rises from the dead and lurks outside Dean’s new cozy abode? That wasn’t a gratuitous scene. Of course, we’ll find out how and why Sam has returned soon enough. For now, however, we get nada.
Interestingly, when Sam tells Dean he needs to rejoin the fight, Dean turns him down. He believes he has to protect his new family. Apparently, he doesn’t care as much as he used to about Sam. Maybe he doesn’t trust him. When Sam introduces Dean to family relations he did know he had, namely the Campbells, his mother’s family, lead by Grandpa Samuel (Mitch Pileggi), Dean is understandably a little suspicious, though not enough to join forces to capture the JINs.
Dean makes the right decision in leaving Sam to deal with his new family and the fight. What’s not clear is why Sam is upset that Dean no longer wants to join in the demon/devil bash-fest.
