‘That’s What She Said’ Review – Outfest 2012

Carrie Preston (“True Blood”) sets aside all-things vampire for a stab at directing big screen comedy in “That’s What She Said,” a randy waggish take on buddy films starring women. Cynical in matters of the heart, depressed Dee Dee (Anne Heche, “Hung”) tries to help her best friend Bebe (Marcia DeBonis, “Lipstick Jungle”), a cheery optimist, realize that she is the victim of a one-night stand. The two decide to flesh things out over coffee when they run into a weeping Clementine (Alia Shawkat, “Arrested Development”), whose boyfriend has just terminated their relationship because she’s a nymphomaniac. Bebe, a bleeding-heart, tries to console Clementine, but instead unleashes riotous darkly comedic events that threaten to ruin the date that might not occur.

Written by Kellie Overbey, “That’s What She Said” is raunchy non-stop laughter. It might not have made it to the big screen had “Bridesmaids” not whetted the industry’s appetite earlier, as both films depict women’s sexuality in a sporting yet honest fashion not before seen in theaters. And like “The Hangover,” there is plenty of material to satisfy the basest of humors.
