LONDON — Nearly 3,000 poor adults and children will be displaced from London to far-flung regions of the UK to make way for the upper classes,As part of Britain’s austerity package aimed at reducing national debt. The council of hipster-heavy Camden town has notified residents it will displace 761 of its families. Many criticized the move as de facto ‘social cleansing.’
Camden, the central-northwest London district best known for its popular weekly street markets, will soon be affordable to only those able to afford the rising rents. The council has said that it will be contacting the families – consisting of 2,816 adults and children – because cuts to the UK’s benefit system mean that many living there will no longer be able to afford their homes, RT reports.
The UK has imposed a number of public-sector cuts on the country, including cuts to children’s services, health services, arts and education.
Overall, these measures are a bad move. They are bad for families, whose housing benefits will be reduced. Camden has the fourth-highest rents of any borough in the country, but the 761 families facing removal will not be able to afford their current accommodation once the reductions kick in.
The measures are also bad for tourism. The city will certainly lose some of its eclectic flavor. And imagine what culture will not come from London when its poor are cleansed. London would never have produced its punk and post-punk scenes without its poor. Where would Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, whose fashion is said to have been inspired by bikers, fetishists and prostitutes, be without the unwashed masses there to act as early adopters.
