It appears Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) got a death wish. He volunteers to help Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Alaric (Matt Davis) solve the moonstone mystery. Recall, Damon snapped Jeremy’s neck, killing him, a few episodes back. I guess that was Jeremy’s passage into manhood because now that he’s been resurrected, he’s itching for a fight. And despite Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) warnings that he’ll get into trouble he doesn’t want, he tells her to bugger off.
“Are you really dead,” asks Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) of her vampire daughter Caroline (Candice Accola), who has her held up in a dungeon in the Salvatore mansion. The two discuss Caroline’s new blood-lust and how she manages to control her hunger by sucking on blood bags stolen from the hospital. Depressed, Forbes shares that she doesn’t want that kind of lifestyle for Caroline. Ever the cheerleader, Caroline retorts “when life gives you lemons,…” Gradually, Forbes sees that becoming a vampire has helped Caroline become more secure. Their relationship becomes stronger.
What has gotten into Bonnie (Katerina Graham), getting involved in Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon’s dispute with Mason (Taylor Kinney)?
Damon chains Mason to a chair and tortures him with a hot poker to gain information about Katherine’s up to with the moonstone. Jeremy discovers that an herb called wolfvain is severely toxic to werewolves in the same way verbain is to vampires. Damon takes sadistic glee in shoving the wolfvain in Mason’s mouth then ripping his heart out. Meanwhile, Stefan unwittingly dives into a well filled with verbain while searching for the moonstone.
When Katherine, who has been having an affair with Mason, learns from Damon that he’s been murdered, Katherine reveals that she’s compelled Elena’s aunt and forces her to stab herself in the gut. Jeremy vows to make Katherine pay.
Finally, Elena comes to her senses and breaks up with vamp-boy Stefan.
